Sydney - Part 2 Previous  Next

Hornby Lighthouse is still used today and sits at the mouth of Sydney harbor.  In the background of the day time photo, you can see the Pacific Ocean and the cliffs that come strait out of the water.  Because the harbor is "S" shaped and over a mile long, the waters are calm until you reach the ocean.  Sharks are known to be in the harbor, especially in the summer.

Bondi Beach, home of the Olympic beach volleyball games in the background on the left, is a beautiful beach with boardwalk shops and pricey living.

Bridge Climb is one of the popular tours in Sydney in which you walk up the steel arch of the Harbor Bridge.  In tour groups of 20, you first walk underneath the bridge on the catwalk until you pass the stone pillars.  From there, each person takes a series of ladders that takes you from underneath the bridge to between the lanes of traffic to the top of the arch way.  From there, you walk up the gentle slope to the top.  Notice that the Olympic rings are being added.

Here we are during the Bridge Climb tour.  (1) We stopped on the way up the steel arch to pose with the Opera House in the background.  (2) At the top of the arch, we crossed all 8 lanes of traffic below to start our decent on the other side.  (3) Starting our decent with the skyline and the stone pillars of the bridge in the background.  There's an observation deck on top of each stone pillar.  (4) Almost on the catwalk underneath the bridge again.

We are given gray jump suits so that our clothes won't get dirty and camouflage ourselves better with the bridge.  Before guests were issued jump suits, drivers on the bridge would be distracted by the colorful clothing as the tour group transitioned from the catwalk underneath the bridge to the ladders between the lanes of traffic to the steel arch.  We wore blue safety harnesses around our waists and were attached to a steel cable the entire tour.  To learn more about the tour, see the Bridge Climb web site.
