May 2002 - Touring England Previous  Next

At Lake Windermere, we took a boat ride across the lake to a steam train ride and an aquarium.  Jeff and his family took the same tour in the summer of 1985 when they were living in Frankfurt, Germany, but the aquarium was a new addition since then.  Ryan is showing Jeff his new souvenir.

In Carlisle, England, we visited a 12th century castle.  It's amazing how well it looked after 900 years.  Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here.

Ryan loved the crown and wood sword in the souvenir shop after the tour.  Do you think he is knighting Ainsley or beheading her?

See the live web cam, courtesy of the BBC, along with the history of the castle with aerial photos.

The Roman's built a 73 mile stone wall called Hadrian's Wall named after the Roman Emperor at their northern most stronghold.  The English and Scots did not settle upon territories until 300 years after the wall was built, but it is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the wall dividing England and Scotland.  While it used to be 15 feet high and as much as 10 feet wide, it is just a few feet high today.

We dodged the on again, off again rain showers through out the day.  All of the rain made the country side lush and green.

There are a lot of sheep in England and where better to learn about the 19 different breeds and sheep shearing than the Lakeland Sheep and Wool Visitors Centre?  It was nice to be inside when the weather wasn't cooperating.  Ryan got a kick out of feeding a lamb after the show and petting the sheep.  He wasn't too interested in petting any sheep with horns, though.
