Here we are
with Andy and Tracey in Perth on the western coast of Australia.
Sunsets on the beach are always pretty. Remember that it is near
the end of winter there and all we needed was a light jacket. The
days are 60 degrees Fahrenheit and the nights dip to 40 degrees.
From on top
of Kings Park for a picnic lunch, the city skyline and harbor span 180
degrees from left to right. We have about half of that in this shot.
Betsi wading in the Indian Ocean in Perth.
Two and a
half hours south of Perth is Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse where the Indian
and Southern Oceans meet. The shores are rocky, the waves are rough,
and the water is a greenish gray. Doesn't Betsi look like she is
posing for a catalog?
A trip to Australia isn't complete until you see
a kangaroo. It's easier to spot them away from the city at dawn or sunset.
We toured
the HMAS Ovens, which is a Oberon class attack sub that was built in 1969
and decommissioned in 1995. It was nice to see a more modern sub
rather than the World War II era subs that you see in America. As
large as it is, it only has one deck from bow to stern. The missile
subs have 3 decks (3 stories tall) inside of them. It had two diesel
engines to charge the 448 batteries on board. Each battery was about
4 feet high. After 5-6 hours of charging, the diesel engines would
be turned off and it would run on batteries for days at a time.
