Order the right version of Microsoft
Office to suit your needs. I buy MS Office separately
so that I have the installation DVD. It gives me better options
when installing a new hard drive either through an upgrade or when
disaster strikes. Most recovery images sold with new computers
have Windows, Office and 25 pieces of bloatware applications stored
as a single image. You have to reinstall everything or nothing. I
hate bloatware. I'd rather have my own Windows and Office
installation DVDs.
Oldest to newest (for PC, not Mac): Office '95, '97, 2000, XP (a.k.a.
2002), 2003, 2007 and 2010.
Microsoft Office Alternatives
If you use advanced features, then there is no substitute for MS Office. For
everything else, consider these alternatives. Oracle
Open Office
($50),
OpenOffice
3.2.1 (free
for PC, Mac, and Linux), and
NeoOffice 3.1.2
(free,
Mac only) are 100% Word, Excel, and Power Point compatible.
Google Docs is free document,
spreadsheet, and presentation software. It's convenient if you
want to work on the same document and switch between a Mac, PC or Linux
computer. The files are stored on Google's servers and are available
any time you are online. There is also an offline version of Google
Docs so that you can work on the document when there isn't an internet
connection available. Google Docs synchronizes the online version
of the document and the one saved to your hard drive. Look for
the green arrow at the top of the screen or watch the video below from DownloadSquad.
