Buy a Mac Unless You Are a Gamer

Macs just work, there is less maintenance, and OS X is much better than Windows Vista.

This is one of the many articles I've read that sums it all up.  PC Magazine said in September 2007:

Why are readers so grumpy this year?  Simply put, more and more Windows PCs require tech support just to set them up properly or, worse yet, require a full-on repair...Of course, no Windows machine comes close to Apple's 9.1 overall score.

I own four PCs and every time I turn one on, anti-virus, firewall and Windows take control of the computer and demand to update themselves before I'm allowed to use it.  Sometimes it demands a reboot.  Excuse me.  Do that on your own time.  I haven't gotten a virus threat in over 10 years so why does the software think I'm going to get one in the next couple of minutes?  After booting up, updating and rebooting, I can now use the computer after wasting 6-7 minutes.  Multiple that aggravation times four computers and multiple that by several times a month and you'll see what I mean.  I know it's not Earth-friendly, but I now leave all of the PCs on 24/7 so this doesn't happen.  The LCD monitors turn off after 5 minutes of inactivity, but that isn't saving much electricity.  Windows' sleep mode causes the computer to go into a coma half the time, so that isn't really an option.  The Mac's sleep mode actually works.

Windows Vista works on new computers, but hardware incompatibility plagues older computers.  That means Windows XP isn't going to disappear anytime soon despite being 6 years old (released October 25, 2001).  Windows XP will still be sold through June 2008, 18 months after Vista was released.  Some even predict Microsoft's down hill slide because of Vista.  Vista also arrived 3 years behind schedule and stripped out half of the improvements that were originally planned.  Vista is a disappointment.  Mac OS X is better than Windows XP or Vista.  Almost everybody who has ever used a Mac loves it.  I'm sure iLife has something to do with it.

Some techies don't like iMacs because they aren't designed to be upgraded.  So what.  Most people I know buy a computer, never upgrade it, and buy a new one several years later.  If you never upgrade the computer anyway, what difference does it make if you get a PC that will allow upgrades or a Mac that won't?  There are too many changes in the PC specs to upgrade to a faster processor without changing 5 parts at the same time (processor, motherboard, RAM, power supply, case).  That's more than half the cost of the box.  Buy a new computer instead.  Upgrading piece meal just doesn't make sense any more.

Some people say Macs are too expensive.  The baseline price is comparable to PCs.  The options can quickly add up, just like the options on a PC.  As long as you avoid the highest price options, the upgrade prices are reasonable.  However, you can't compare a $600 PC with monitor to a $1,200 iMac.  They don't perform at the same level.  You are paying for a higher quality product with the iMac.  Spend less time maintaining a computer by purchasing a Mac and spend more time enjoying life.  How much is your time worth?  Nothing?  Mine sure isn't.

There aren't any games for the Mac.  If there were any games, the current video cards can't handle today's best games.  Scenes would be redrawn 20 times a second instead of the minimum 60 times a second for full motion video.  Also, you can't upgrade the video card every six months as gamers often do.
